In order for restoration to be successful it is essential that targeted emergency measures are actioned immediately.
Emergency measures that are swiftly initiated and professionally implemented are decisive for further restoration of buildings and inventory stock. Important: the duty to minimise damages applies to each party affected by the damage, pursuant to insurance law.
Damage-mitigating
emergency
measures are
classified as follows:
if the insurance provider is to pay for the damage this must be reported immediately.
In essence, the following must be notified:
– the buildings insurance provider
– the household insurance provider
Containing the damage:
- Divert fumes into the atmosphere as quickly as possible
- Keep doors and gates closed (avoid draughts!)
- Secure non-affected areas from becoming polluted by any transmitted dirt
Avoid further damage:
- Shut down ventilation and air-conditioning systems as well as other equipment
- Close off supply lines (gas, electricity, district heat)
- Switch off existing uninterruptible power supply
Secure the damage zone:
- Shut off or secure hazardous areas
- Protect plant components and equipment from water
- Close off building openings, making them watertight and resistant to breakage
NEVER conduct operating tests on electrical equipment under any circumstances! (Condensed smoke causes leakage currents, therefore a short-circuit hazard!)
Inform
insurance provider:
if the insurance provider is to pay for the damage this must be reported immediately.
The fire must not have been started deliberately, nor caused through gross negligence.
In principle we can differentiate between two types of insurance:
Buildings insurance
Mandatory for all homeowners. Alongside the damages to the basic structure of the privately owned home it also covers all the damage to fixed parts connected to the building (e.g. interior and external doors, windows, painting, wallpaper, ceiling and wall coverings, affixed floor coverings, bath, washbasins, etc.).
Clearing and demolition work as well as disposal costs regarding the building are insured up to a maximum limit (= insured amount) that is defined on a case-by-case basis. You can find a more detailed list or classification under the ‘Grouping notes’ section of your insurance policy.
Household insurance
If damage occurs, household insurance takes on the costs for the replacement or restoration of furnishings and household effects in accordance with the scope of cover agreed.
